Langley Moor Primary School

Class 5

(Year 5)

Step up. Find your voice. Find out what you can really achieve.

Year 5 is such an important year – it’s a time when children really begin to step up, grow in independence, and develop the confidence to tackle bigger challenges. It’s about finding their voice, working as a team, and discovering just what they are capable of achieving.

We’ll begin the year with an adventure into the world of the Vikings. From longships and raids to daily life in Viking villages, we will explore myths, legends and real history, bringing the past to life through stories, projects and creative work.

In science, we will explore materials and their properties, investigating how different substances behave and discovering practical ways to separate them through hands-on experiments. We’ll be blasting off into space too – learning about our solar system, planets and the wonders of the universe. We’ll ask big questions about how we know what we know, and use models and experiments to deepen our understanding of life beyond Earth.

Through computing, we’ll dive into digital systems learning to program and problem-solve with micro:bits, using them to design and test real digital models. A highlight will be our visit to the Cummins factory, where we’ll see how technology is used in the real world and get the chance to build our own projects alongside experts.

Sport is another big part of Year 5. We’re lucky to work with specialist coaches who will help us sharpen our skills in hockey, basketball, tennis and cricket. Children will learn not only the techniques of each game but also teamwork, sportsmanship and resilience. And when the summer arrives, we’ll enjoy our swimming lessons, building water confidence and having fun while staying active.

Altogether, it promises to be a year full of discovery, teamwork and fun – one where every child has the chance to shine and take big steps forward on their learning journey.
