PSHCE

At Langley Moor Primary School, PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) plays a central role in supporting our children’s personal development, emotional wellbeing, and readiness for life beyond the classroom. Through a carefully planned and inclusive curriculum, we aim to help every child develop a positive sense of self, build healthy relationships, and make informed, responsible decisions.

Our PSHCE curriculum is structured around key themes such as emotional well-being, healthy lifestyles, relationships, and citizenship, ensuring progression from Reception to Year 6. Using the KAPOW scheme as a foundation, lessons are engaging, age-appropriate, and adaptable to meet the needs of all learners. Children explore real-life scenarios, take part in role-play and discussions, and reflect on their own experiences through journaling, group work, and creative activities.

What makes PSHCE unique is its focus on equipping children with essential life skills—such as empathy, resilience, conflict resolution, and active citizenship. The subject also addresses mental health explicitly, teaching strategies to manage stress, build self-esteem, and understand the importance of a healthy mind and body.

Our learning model encourages active participation and emotional literacy. Floor Books in each class capture shared reflections and group learning, while digital platforms like Seesaw and Tapestry record individual contributions, giving children multiple ways to express their understanding. This inclusive approach supports all learners, including those who may find written tasks challenging, by offering alternatives like drawing, speaking, or collaborative work.

Assessment in PSHCE is ongoing and purposeful. At the end of each unit, children complete ‘exit tickets’ to show what they’ve learned—whether it’s identifying stress management strategies, describing a healthy friendship, or recognising their responsibilities in the community. These reflections help teachers tailor future learning and ensure every child is making progress in developing vital life skills.

By the time children leave Langley Moor, they are confident, caring, and reflective individuals who understand themselves and others. Our PSHCE curriculum helps them thrive personally and socially, laying the foundation for happy, healthy futures.
